They were down by 3 early on and then down to their final strike in the 9th. Somehow, the Giants overcame both of these holes.

The San Francisco Giants (9-4) ended up winning a back and forth game against the Chicago Cubs (4-8) in 10 innings 10-7. The Giants were down 4-1 after the 1st inning but managed to take the lead with a 4-run sixth inning partly because of five wild pitches by Edwin Jackson and Michael Bowden. That tied the major league record for most wild pitches by a team in an inning.

The Giants would take the lead in that 6th inning with Nick Noonan hitting a two-run single to make it 5-4. Noonan didn’t play in games 2 or 3 of this series but started at 2B in game 1 going 3-5.

After the Giants tacked on another run in the top of the 7th, the Cubs would strike back with a solo shot by Alberto Gonzalez in the bottom of the inning to make it a one run game again.

Then in the 8th, Jeremy Affeldt came in, allowed the bases to be loaded, and walked in the game tying run. Santiago Casilla would relieve him to allow the go ahead run to score with Alfonso Soriano hitting a sac fly to make it 7-6.

Then in the 9th, with 2 outs and the Giants being down to their last strike, Hunter Pence manages to hit a solo home run off Shawn Camp to left center to keep San Francisco alive for another inning. It was Pence’s 4th home run of the year and would end up going 3-4 in the game. Pence has gotten at least one hit in every game of this series.

Despite a lead off walk, the Cubs would have a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with Starlin Catsro grounding into a double play facing George Kontos.

In the 10th inning, Shawn Camp committed a balk with runners on the corners allowing Hector Sanchez to score the go ahead run from 3rd. Buster Posey, who was subbed into the game via a double switch, then singled in Brandon Crawford from 2nd to make it a 2-run game. A couple batters latter, Marco Scutaro hits a double down the left field line to score in Angel Pagan to make it a 3-run ballgame.

Sergio Romo came into the game in the bottom of the 10th to close it out. He allowed a lead off double to Soriano but got the next three out ending the game on a grounder to short. Romo claims hit 7 save of the year while George Kontos (1-1) gets credited with the win.

Tim Lincecum started the game for the Giants and gave up 4 runs in the 1st inning on two separate 2-run home runs. First, Starlin Castro homered with David DeJesus on base. And then Nate Schierholtz, the former Giant, homered off Lincecum with Soriano on base. Lincecum wouldn’t allow anymore runs but that 4-run 1st raised his ERA to 5.63.

As for Edwin Jackson, he allowed 5 runs, 4 earned in 5 1/3 innings. His ERA is now raised to 6.06.

The other three game in the series were interesting ones. Game 1 had the Giants holding onto a 7-6 victory with Romo getting the save.

Romo didn’t have the same luck for game two as he allowed the game tying home run to Dioner Navarro in the 9th followed by a walk off double by Starlin Castro for a 4-3 Cubs win.

Then the Giants rebounded in game three with a slim 3-2 victory. Madison Bumgarner improved to 3-0 on the year going 6 2/3 innings allowing 3 earned runs in the win.

All four games were close with the Giants able to pull out victories in three of them.

The Giants now take a day off before playing a three game series in Milwaukee against the Brewers (3-8) starting Tuesday night. Probables for the Giants are Barry Zito (2-0), Ryan Vogelsong (1-1), and Matt Cain (0-1). Probables for the Brewers are Wily Peralta (0-1), Mike Fiers (0-1), and Kyle Lohse (0-1).
